Powell raises for a stronger back

Powell raises for the scapula retractors (mid back, rhomboids and traps), rear deltoids and external rotators. This is a great exercise for scapular and shoulder health and stability. Most people are weak and underdeveloped in this area while at the same time being tight and or over developed in the front/anterior deltoids, pecs and other internal rotators. This creates an imbalance and can lead to an injury and also negatively impact your muscle size and strength.


A couple keys


1️⃣ I like to have people retract their scapula/shoulder blades before each rep. This helps engage the right muscles before each rep.

2️⃣ Keep the dumbbell in line with the eyes

3️⃣ Have a slight or soft bend in the elbow but don’t move it around.
